Tango

I checked my watch for the tenth time since we sat down. “He’s late.”

“Your eyeballs glued to your watch ain’t gonna make those little hands go ’round any faster,” Sundance said, casually nursing a beer.

“He’s not coming.”

“If he said he’ll be here, he’ll be here.”

“You’re sure putting a lot of faith in the word of a man who once wanted you dead.”

Sundance nodded. “I’m sure he still does, but so far he’s stuck to our treaty agreement.”

I scowled. “Yeah, but now that he’s in bed with the Beast, he’ll come for you again someday.”

“Someday soon I’d imagine, so let’s not fuck this meeting up.”

Just then, Jaws entered the bar followed by his newly appointed VP, Sturgeon. The Predators’ previous vice president had been shown to his grave by Sundance’s son, Orion, which made for a sticky situation as Sundance killed their previous president, Kong. Of course, Kong killed Sundance’s first wife, so was seen as justified, but after Orca, the peace between the two clubs was strained to say the least.

Sundance gave the pair a nod and they approached our booth.

“Sunny,” Jaws said with a nod.

“I don’t expect we need to pat you gentlemen down,” Sundance said.

“This is Smiley’s,” Jaws replied. “I know the fuckin’ rules.”

Sundance motioned for the two of them to sit.

“Well, well. Jaws and Sturgeon together,” Sundance said. “It’s always nice to spend some quality time with the aquatic division of the Predators.”

Jaws eyeballed me. “And who’s the young lieutenant with us here tonight?”

“This is Tango. He’s not an officer, but he’s got the stones to make a good one someday.”

“Good for him.”

A pretty, young waitress came to our table to take our drink orders.

“Gimmie a double of that Old Forrester 1910 you’ve got stashed behind that bar, sweetheart, and put it on my tab,” Jaws said.

“Tell you what,” Sundance interjected. “How ’bout you bring us four glasses and the bottle, and go ahead and put that on my tab.”

Jaws raised an eyebrow, grinning from ear to ear. “Sounds like someone needs a favor.”

“On the contrary. We’re here to celebrate,” Sundance replied.

Jaws leaned back and cocked his head. “Oh yeah? It’s not my birthday, and it’s a bit early for Christmas, so what exactly are we celebrating?”

Our waitress returned with four double shots, setting the bottle at the center of the table.

“Thank you,” Sundance said, handing her a twenty. “I’ll let you know if we need anything else.”

She nodded and smiled politely before beating a hasty retreat back to the bar.

Sundance raised his glass, and the rest of us followed suit. “I suppose we really should have cigars for the occasion, but here goes. It’s a boy,” he exclaimed, clinking glasses with a confused looking Jaws.

“I don’t get it,” Jaws said. “What? The kid is having a baby?” He pointed at me. “Congratu-fuckin-lations, but what’s that gotta do with me?”

“Not quite,” I said, placing a manila envelope on the table.

“What’s this?”

I tried to smile, but I’m pretty sure it looked more like a grimace. “It’s proof that you’re my father.
