Chapter Twelve

"This has been the strangest day," I said when we finally broke apart. My lips tingled and the taste of chocolate — mine and his — lingered on my tongue.

"It is definitely in my top ten of most interesting days," agreed Jack. He drifted inches away from me, close enough that I could lean in and kiss him again, but far enough away that I could focus. The more I looked at him — properly now, alone, without being distracted by the business of a kitchen operating around us — the more I saw how handsome he was. Short, dark brown hair and green eyes that looked at me with primal wonder, the masculine cut of his jaw with a day’s stubble marking a shadow, not to mention, the fullness of his lips. Why didn't I notice how good looking he was over the past few months? Was I really that distracted by work?

Jack's cellphone pinged, dragging me unwillingly back to reality. I noted his hesitation in answering before he sighed as he reached for it. "My editor wants to know how the book is coming along," he said, reading the text before placing the phone on the island.

"How is it coming along?"

"Everything seems to be turning out better than expected," he replied. His hands drifted from my waist, reaching to cup my face as he leaned in and kissed me again, softer this time, and deeper. I began tugging him closer, then yelped as the glass cup caught on my sleeve, splashing the hot liquid across my arm.

"Ow! Ow! Ow!" I groaned as we pulled apart and I cringed. "I am so sorry!" I held up my sleeve, not sure if I were more annoyed about the moment we lost or because my sleeve was now dripping with wet, hot chocolate, or because I lost a chance to drink more of the delicious beverage. Possibly all three.

"I'll get you a clean t-shirt to wear," Jack said, hopping to his feet. "And I'll put that straight into the wash or it'll stain... Alexandra?"

"No! And thank you," I called to his retreating back. He shot me a smile over his shoulder as he left the room. While waiting, I grabbed a cloth and cleaned up the mess then I took the time to look around, finding every corner of Jack's space interesting. Somehow, his home had a masculine feel that didn't fall into cliche, yet still managed to be light-filled, even on this overcast day.

I thought about reaching for Jack's manuscript, curious about his unique creations, but decided that might be too invasive. It was pleasing enough that he trusted me with the knowledge of his mission. I was also glad he shared the real reason why he'd taken my offered job despite the reduction in pay and status.

The job. I gulped. I'd just kissed someone who was not only my colleague, but also my employee. What the hell did Jack think of me now? I overstepped the boundary.

Rising to my feet, my head was spinning as I considered the position we were in.
