In N and W Britain and Ireland most frequently found in old pastures and hay meadows, again usually on calcareous soils; on rare occasions found on mildly acidic soils on moorland, wet heath and pastures but less tolerant of acid conditions than Lesser Butterfly Orchid. Probably frequent in pastures and meadows in S England prior to their ‘improvement’ but away from woodland sites now only likely to be found on chalk grassland, often in long grass with variable amounts of scrub. Sometimes also found in calcium-rich dune slacks and on railway embankments. Occurs up to 460m above sea level (Northumberland).
