Could this day get any worse? Could his life get any worse?

Rage and despair vied for dominance in Galen’s heart and mind as he turned off the recorder and removed his headphones, effectively silencing his mother cursing out Massimo’s mother, calling her the most vile names that Galen had ever heard, telling her that her husband didn’t love her, that he was divorcing her, taking her children away from her, and putting her out of her home.

“You’ve had your goodbye fuck. Now start packing, bitch!” was the last thing Judith barked before the line went dead.

Galen trembled as he sat upright on the edge of his chair trying to absorb the nauseating truth about his mother’s cruelty, how her actions had caused the deaths of Giuliana Andretti and her prematurely born child who’d lived only for a few precious moments after she was taken from her mother’s womb.

How could Galen ever get over what she’d done? Her selfish, immoral, and malevolent behavior had caused the deaths of two innocent people, and robbed a ten-year-old boy of a life of happiness with his mother. He had no sympathy for Luciano losing his wife, because as far as Galen was concerned, his father was equally to blame for the years of dark grief that had descended upon his family. Cheating on his wife made him just as guilty as Judith.

Galen’s gut coiled with regret as he recalled the day, two summers ago, when Mass had caught him in the music room sitting at his mother’s piano playing Für Elise from the music sheet on the stand.

Just before he’d given him the tape tonight, Massimo had told Galen that he had been sitting next to his mother listening to her play Für Elise, when the phone rang. Mass said that seconds after his mother picked up the receiver, she’d turned as white as a ghost and then collapsed onto the floor. The piano room was the last place in the mansion where Mass had happy memories of his mother, and ironically the worst, as well. Mass’ happy memories had become tainted with bitterness and sadness after learning that Judith Carmichael had made that call and had, in his opinion, murdered his mother and his baby sister.

Fury choked Galen as he thought of the lies his mother had told his aunt, and who in turn had passed them on to him. He hung his head in profound revulsion as he thought of his role in sullying that sacred room, merely by crossing the threshold, and then adding insult to Massimo’s injury by ignorantly throwing the lies his aunt Gertrude had told him about Luciano and Judith’s love for each other into Massimo’s face.

Massimo had had every right to have gone into a rage and thrown Galen out of the room, and then beaten the crap out of him in the hallway while the servants looked on, probably with glee since many of them had been with the family for years and had loved Giuliana.
