Chapter Eight
Michael slowly sipped his scotch as he watched Rafe watch Denny dance. The emotions that played out over Rafe’s face were almost as interesting as watching Denny’s hips swing from side to side as he tried to entice his master. Michael would say it was working. Rafe was practically drooling.
Dante wasn’t doing much better. If he stared at his sub’s ass any harder, Danny’s tight little black boy shorts were going to go up in flames.
As Michael turned his head to look at the third couple sitting with them in the VIP lounge—Logan and Joey—the realization that he was the only one without a date was brought home to him in a harsh way. He was alone, and it looked like he was going to be alone for quite some time.
It had been almost two weeks since he drove away and left Jackson at his apartment. Each moment had been excruciating. He missed Jackson more than he ever thought he would miss a sub, even one he wanted more than he wanted his next breath.
Letting Jackson go had been the right choice and he knew it. Now, if he could just convince himself of that for real, his life would probably run a lot smoother. As it was, he was so miserable not even being at the club with his friends made him feel better.
Several subs had tried to get his attention when he entered the club. It happened almost every time. Michael knew it was because he came in alone. There were some subs that didn’t care if a Dom was alone or not. If they thought they had a chance, they played it up. But most merely waited to be invited before approaching.
Michael looked away from Logan and Joey when one of the bouncers approached Dante. He watched as the man leaned down and whispered into Dante’s ear, frowning when Dante glanced over at him.
“There’s a police detective here to see you,” Dante said. “Are you in some sort of trouble?”
“Not that I kno—Jackson!” Michael jumped up and headed out of the VIP lounge as fast as he could walk considering his legs were shaking. His heart thundered in so hard in his chest that it threatened to break right out through his ribs.
If something had happened to Jackson…
A brown-haired man stood just outside the entrance. When Michael stepped through the doorway, the man straightened and stepped toward him.
“Michael Cortés?”
“Yes.”
The man held a white envelope out to him. Michael didn’t even have to touch it to know it was the same envelope he had given Jackson. And it looked like it hadn’t even been opened. Michael’s hand trembled as he took the envelope and smoothed his fingers over the outside.
“Jackson asked me to give this to you.”
Michael glanced up. “You know Jackson?”
“I questioned him down at the police station. Sean O’Leary had made some pretty serious accusations against you. I was trying to find out if he needed help or wanted to press charges.”
Michael’s breath caught.
The police officer gave him a peculiar look.
