Chapter 6: A Few Too Many

“This is Amber.” I put my arm around her waist. “She’s my date for the evening.”

“Wait...” He tilted his head. “Not the same Amber that runs the dorms.”

“The very same.” She smiled, gazing vivaciously from beneath her thick black lashes. “Don’t worry, I’m not half as mean when I’m off the clock.”

“Well, my name is Michael but everyone calls me Mike.” He put his arm around her and headed for the kitchen. “Dwight! Mix this lovely lady a cosmo!”

“Mike.” I grabbed him by the arm. “Be nice.”

“Hey, I’ll be the perfect gentleman.” He held his hand up giving the boy-scout salute.

“You weren’t in the scouts, Mikey.”

“Not officially.” He rolled his eyes. “But in my heart...”

“Rick Lauder!” A voice called out behind me. “I saw you score the winning touchdown at Athens’ last game. You are a beast on the field.” A Man in his late thirties smiled and pushed through the crowd.

“Thanks so much.” I reached out to shake his hand and seeing his arm, I realized that this guy was at least as big as I was. “Where do you play?”

“I haven’t played in years.” He laughed. “I actually just got a job working as a sports commentator for a big network. I still have some friends that play pro though.”

“Wait, are you...”

“Edward Sanders, pleased to meet you.”

“Holy shit. You’re a legend at Athens. I’m so sorry I didn’t recognize you.”

“Don’t sweat it. Hey, I’ve got some people I’d love to introduce you to.”

I peeked over the crowd, spotting Amber’s red dress in the kitchen laughing with a group of people.

She’s having a good time, I guess it would be okay for me to break off for a little bit.

Over the next hour, I met a few of Edward’s colleagues. One of them was friends with a coach of a pro-team that was scouting for new players. We had some drinks and talked about Football and my training routine. I walked out to the back yard where a few of my buddies were standing around drinking beer by the pool. It was nice to catch up with everyone. After I got arrested, I sort of fell out of communication for a bit. Now that I knew I wasn’t going to be charged with anything, I could start trying to get things back to normal.

Suddenly a familiar face made my entire body tense up. That blonde wavy hair and big sparkling smile was unmistakable.

Chelsea...

“Fuck my life.” I smacked Joe on the shoulder. “Nobody told me she was going to be here.”

“So what?” He shrugged. “She’s friends with my cousin. I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal. She’s not the one who punched you in the face. If I didn’t invite every single girl who had an asshole for a father, it would be a big fat sausage fest up in here.”

“Fair enough.” I took a sip of my beer and watched as her big blue eyes caught sight of me. “Shit. She saw me.
