Even with her modified schedule, Gemma was busy on Wednesday thanks to several last-minute requests for job-hunting advice from former students. Together they rummaged through the outfits she had accumulated for just this purpose, then she prepped them almost the same way she had prepped Luke for the Hot Seat. And why not? They were all kindred spirits, weren’t they? Even if one was a highly paid quarterback while the others saw minimum wage as a decent goal? They were reinventing themselves while also staying true to their core values. And for one of her students in particular, who was a bit of a prideful hothead, the parallel felt unusually real.

She didn’t want to change that student. Nor did she want to change Luke. Their struggle against conformity thrilled her, probably because she wanted them to win the battle. To be themselves. Even as Gemma Jones, she was Mia Sabella. Whenever she lost sight of that, she floundered.

Wasn’t that what had happened to Luke? To Whimsy? And most hauntingly of all, to Angie Sabella, who, by the end, had had almost no sense of self at all. Just a mother trying to protect her daughter despite the strange city, the absence of adult family or even acquaintances, and a myriad of tubes and monitors hooked to every part of her bedridden body.

Turning, she almost swooned at the golden sparkle in his brown eyes. She didn’t know how he’d gotten through the gate and she didn’t care. All that mattered was his vibrant expression. “You’re happy?”

“It went great,” he explained, pulling her gently against himself. “I ran routes for the first time in forever. Man, I’ve missed that.”

“Routes?”

He smiled gently. “Did you forget? Me and Luke and Jake Dublin had our first practice today and it went great. Dub critiqued us both—me and Luke. Then Dub took the field because he was a wide-out in college, right? So Luke threw to him and I took over as coach. Which was even more fun, believe it or not.”

“Oh, wow.”

“I’d say it was the most fun I’ve had in years. But obviously . . .” He nuzzled her neck. “Last night was even better.”

“Oh, God.” She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him amorously, then pulled back and insisted, “We can’t do this in public.”

“I agree. Let’s go upstairs.”

“Wait!” She cupped his cheek in her palm. “Oh, God, I can’t resist you. But it has to be on my terms, Nick.”

“Whatever you say.”

“No one can know. Except Harley, obviously. And it can’t mean anything—”

“Gemma?” he asked, his tone gravelly with need. “Can we negotiate later?”

Something about that voice ignited her. Or maybe it was the hard feel of his body. Whatever it
