The skatepark’s location beneath the Manhattan Bridge means that it stays in the shade for most of the day. Amid all the other ramps and obstacles dotted around, the park designers planted a shiny red apple – a big apple, naturally. There’s also a key skatepark feature: ledges on which to sit while watching your friends’ wipe-outs.

As Chinatown’s Daredevil Tattoo reveals in its in-house museum, tattoo parlours were banned in New York City in 1961 in response to a hepatitis B outbreak. Only a few underground studios remained operational in Coney Island and the Lower East Side.
