1300: London’s most cultured public museum started life as the Museum of Manufactures, a spin-off from the Great Exhibition of 1851, which hopped around the city before making its home in South Kensington. Among other innovations, the Victoria & Albert Museum was the first museum in the world with its own refreshment room.

The V&A Refreshment Rooms are worth a visit as much for the architecture as for the menu. The three themed dining rooms, created by painter Edward Poynter, majolica-enthusiast James Gamble, and Arts & Crafts pioneer William Morris, once served three different menus, divided by social class.
