rjHOKiNG and gasping for breath, Bruce reached his mother and father. The situation was obvious at a glance. The lovely cream-colored petals, which J had been the plant's chief attraction, were transformed into tentacles twisting and writhing around the child's back and neck like a mass of earthworms. And the golden corolla at the center had expanded to form the lips of a mouth surrounded by pulsing sphincterlike tendrils leading to the bulky stem below. Ordinarily the plant had to obtain its supply of protein in little pieces from insects and small animals that strayed within its grasp. Now with the deliberation of a slow-motion picture the tentacles were bearing the screaming child toward the mouth yawning to receive its prey. Here was a feast indeed!
