Chapter 4

Harriet

The outfit I chose for the gala fits as if it was made for me. It's a shimmery red with a slit that rises to my upper thigh and I’ve paired it with black stilettos, the strap circling my ankles. I’ve always loved dressing up, yet this time it feels special.

My mind and heart having been playing tug of war since arriving in Barcelona. On the one hand, I love spending time with Reid, and the sex is fantastic, but there’s also this need to protect myself. I intentionally put space between us after our shopping adventure, though he's been blowing up my phone.

"What the hell am I doing?" I mumble. We’re enemies, rivals. The whole reason we're both here is to gain Walsh's solar power technology. Besides, he probably just views this as a fling, so I should take a step back and do the same, not make it out to be anything more than that. And I need to put my focus on work, which is where it should be.

With one last glance in the mirror, I gather my clutch and head to the elevator. The doors are just about to close when a hand shoots out, stopping them. It's Reid, of course, appearing fantastic in a tux. He reminds me of James Bond in this moment, and I feel my knees weaken.

"You look dapper," I say, trying to act normal. He doesn't smile, just steps in, pressing the emergency button once the doors close.

He forces me into a corner, looming above me with a dark scowl as he takes me in from head to toe. "You look like the Queen of England."

"Are you saying I’m a ninety-year-old woman?"

"No. That you’re perfection, and I can’t wait to unwrap you tonight," he explains, his finger stroking my cheek before lightly running the tip over my bright red lipstick. "And I want this to leave marks all over my body."

"It’s smudge proof," I whisper, his body plastered to mine causing me to breath heavy.

"I'll be the judge of that." He's careful not to crush my dress as he hold my hips in place while he gives me a passionate kiss. His tongue invades my mouth, dominating me in the way I love.

"You've been ignoring me,” he tells me, his expression unhappy. Needing to think clearly, I duck under the arm now caging me in and restart the elevator.

"Reid, this is a business event. I need to focus on networking, which means our little fling cannot be allowed to distract me."

His expression morphs from irritation to bloody rage. "What the fuck you just say?" He barks.

Luckily, the elevator opens and I try to escape into the ballroom. Reid’s hand encircles my wrist before I can, halting my movements, and he scolds me like a child, "Don't run from me."
