BY THE TIME BROOKE made it back to the office, Lewis was waiting for her. “What’s the verdict?” she asked, motioning for him to sit across the desk from her.

“Well, according to her credit card records, it looks like your mother crisscrossed half of Europe and Asia, just to get to New York. She must have lost her purse in New York. How she got from New York to Denver and then to the penthouse is a mystery.” Lewis was genuinely concerned when he asked, “How is she?”

“I really can’t say for sure. She’s lost weight, but other than that, she seems okay physically.”

“She never had that much extra weight to begin with. I best get my candy bowl back out.”

Brooke smiled, “Don’t forget to eat all the black ones.”

“I won’t.”

When Lewis didn’t get up to leave, she suspected there was more. “What else?”

“Well, she bought a yacht she’ll probably never see again.”

“And?”

“And a very expensive wedding dress.”

Brooke moaned, “Oh, nooo. Any way to tell if she actually got married?”

“Not that I have found, but she bought the yacht for someone named Louis Philippe about three weeks ago.”

“Sounds like a wedding present.”

“Yes it does,” Lewis agreed. “Anyway, the bank is opening a whole new account for her, and putting a hold on the old one so no more charges can go through. Her cards show the purchase of two cars in New York City, and some household items. I suspect those are fraudulent.”

“I agree. Is there more?”

“Not yet,” he said standing up. “I’ll keep you posted.”

Lewis hadn’t been gone long before Brooke called Tony.

“Hi.”

“Tony, can you see what you can find out about a man named Louis Philippe? We’re not sure and Mother certainly isn’t talking, but Lewis and I suspect she may have gotten married in Paris and then left him. I’m worried about a husband showing up looking for a divorce settlement.”

“That could get really complicated.”

“I think so too. By the way, Hadley doesn’t know about this.”

“Understood. I’ll call if I find anything.”

“Thanks, you’re an angel.”
