It is easy to forget that heeling is part of obedience for your dog and something he has to make an effort to do, just as much as any of the other exercises we teach him. A lot of people have their dogs on heel and then forget about it, leaving the dog having to concentrate quite hard for a long period of time while the boss is just wandering along enjoying a country walk or chatting to friends. This is very often where the problem of not heeling has started in the first place. So if you are not going to be concentrating on your dog for a while for any reason, put him back on the lead so that he can relax and know he doesn’t have to think about anything while you’re chatting with your next door neighbour or admiring the roses.
