Chapter Eight

Music buzzed up from the soles of Jeremy’s feet, along his spine, and over his scalp, waking him from his nap in the shade. He and Kit had been at the Dive Bar for so long Jeremy had thoroughly forgotten the world outside the poolside venue. Orange-and-gold-streaked clouds lazed over a darkening sky to the west. Twinkling lights covered palm branches and the fabric-draped sides of the private cabanas.

Kit had procured them a white canvas oasis when they’d arrived. The little indoor-outdoor room insulated them from passersby while he and Kit lounged on a couch strewn with pillows and ordered food from an iPad. A table stocked with towels and sunscreen catered to all the needs the staff didn’t immediately fill.

Braziers heated the cabana, their flickering light becoming more apparent as the sky darkened. Steam hung over the heated pool, making everything hazy and dreamlike. Jeremy didn’t know when he’d felt this relaxed. Languid and loose right down to his toes. What an idyllic afternoon.

Sounds of laughter and sighs of pleasure drifted from the next cabana over. Anything went here, it seemed. Anything. Just close the cabana draperies, and guests could indulge in delights—innocent and not so innocent—without raising an eyebrow.

From behind mirrored sunglasses, Jeremy watched Kit approach—a mai tai in each hand, his skin painted gloriously tan in the waning light. Jeremy hadn’t heard Kit leave and had no idea how long he’d been asleep. Disorientation added to the surreal moment as Kit rose from the water, a veritable Poseidon. Moisture cascaded from naked skin to patter against bluestone pavers in a perfect moment.

Sometimes Hollywood felt and smelled like magic. The glitter sank into Jeremy’s skin until, famous or not, celebrity supercharged his awareness. It was good to be with Kit at times like these simply because he knew how to be famous. How to amplify rarified glamour and make its energy hum. This Kit—the famous Kit—could be infuriatingly shallow, but he could also let go. Relax. Show Jeremy how to have fun.

“Hey.” Kit gave Jeremy a heavy-lidded smile.

Sleepy and lazy, Jeremy smiled back as he took off his glasses. “Hey.”

A spark came to light between them, a jolt of energy Jeremy knew Kit felt too. Kit put down their drinks and lifted one hand. An attendant approached.

“We’d like some privacy,” Kit said.

The man dipped his chin and closed the curtains.

“Someone will hear,” Jeremy said when the attendant left them in the muffled privacy of the now closed-off cabana.

Kit, who’d been lighting a cluster of candles on a table, eyed the closed canvas flap. “Then you’ll just have to be quiet.”

Jeremy used his elbows to push himself upright. “I kinda figured when you said give it until the end of the month that sex was off the table.”

“Sex on the table. That’s definitely an idea for later.” Kit’s over-the-shoulder grin teased as much as his words.

Still, Jeremy couldn’t let go of the dichotomy between Kit’s behavior in the trailer and now. Was he really okay with the relationship
