CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
IT RAINED THE next day, and Kaleb decided not to run out in it. It was kind of scary how much his life had come full-circle, but there was no one he wanted to curl up with today. Instead, he sat on the windowsill like he used to, resting his forehead against the glass of the front window as he watched the rain come down, breathing against the glass and fogging it up. Stevie was there with him, but he pointedly ignored his twin.
He had one of his legs pulled up and pressed to his chest as he rested his chin on his kneecap. He was zoning out, lashes lowered over his eyes as he listened to the rhythmic beat of the rain outside and on the roof. It was calming, really. It was early November, a little after his birthday. His daughter had been born a mere two weeks before him, only thirty years later.
"Kaleb?"
Stevie's voice interrupted his thoughts, and he glanced over his shoulder, lifting an eyebrow at his brother. The man was looking at him curiously, observing him, and he shifted to show his displeasure. He hated feeling like he was under some kind of microscope.
"What?"
"Are you… using again?" Stevie's question was hesitant, and for good reason.
Kaleb laughed harshly and shook his head in disbelief. "Yeah. And?" was his cool response as he lifted an eyebrow at his brother, cocking his head the other way and keeping eye contact with Stevie. It was harder than it sounded.
"I'm worried about you," Stevie said. Kaleb scoffed. "Seriously, I am! You don't know what kind of health risks come with this kinda stuff."
"I know the risks," Kaleb said, his voice flat as he looked away with a sigh.
"Kaleb—"
"You know what? Shut the fuck up. Just because my life's been shitty and yours has been just fuckin' peachy, you think I need you to worry about me? Fuck you, dude. I can handle this shit on my own. I don't need you to help me, Mr. Perfect."
Stevie looked wounded as he collapsed back against the couch. He seemed unable to come up with a proper retort to Kaleb’s words for a moment before he took a deep breath. Kaleb somehow knew he wasn't going to like what his twin was going to say.
"You know what, Kaleb? I'm not perfect, all right? I've got my problems, but obviously they're not as important as yours. You're so selfish, man. You have no idea because you're so in your own head."
He didn't expect it to hurt so much, though. The words seemed to hit just the right nerve to shatter his resolve. Kaleb's brows furrowed this time as the tears stung his eyes right before they streamed down his face. He covered his mouth with his hand to stop a sob from escaping as he looked away from his brother. What Stevie said hit him hard, and he hated it because the fact of the matter was: it was true. He bit his tongue to keep a retort back.
