CHAPTER EIGHT

LATER THAT NIGHT, Ned awoke to a clap of thunder so loud he felt the house shake. From her dog bed in the corner of his bedroom, Molly whimpered. Forks of lightning illuminated the room as if it were midday. Rain drummed down on the roof and gushed along the gutters and down the drainpipes outside his upstairs window.

Ned switched on his bedside lamp and swung out of bed. ‘It’s all right, girl,’ he said to his dog, leaning down to pat her. ‘You’re safe here.’

Molly had been frightened of storms since she was a pup. Ned felt exhilarated by them. He loved the display of nature’s power. And, as a farmer in a country where the threat of drought was constant, he relished the sound of the rain filling his property’s dams and the collection tanks that provided household water.

Freya had surprised him when she had confessed to a fear of storms. He understood the fear of dogs, certainly the fear of snakes, which was shared by nearly every person he knew. But storms? She seemed somehow fiercer than that.

Freya.

Ned realised it wasn’t just the thunder that had woken him, or Molly’s whimper. Rather it was a strong impulse that Freya needed him.

Perhaps it was a remnant from a dream, or his concern for her alone in the cottage. He had suggested she stay in the house for the night but she had—unsurprisingly—insisted on her independence in the cottage. He had escorted her to her accommodation then gone back to his immaculate hotel-style bedroom.

Lying by himself in the king-sized bed, as he’d struggled to get to sleep, he’d felt lonelier than he could ever remember feeling. He was disconcerted by Freya’s insistence he was the ‘marrying kind’, who wasn’t married. It was nearly as bad as cousin Erin’s ‘never a groom’ remarks. He was even more disconcerted by the fact Freya didn’t meet one of his bride criteria but checked so many other boxes in terms of appeal, including being beautiful, sexy, smart, and damn good company. He couldn’t get her out of his mind.

He checked the illuminated clock on his nightstand. Past midnight. He needed to see if she was okay. Ned was a practical, down-to-earth kind of guy. Yet somehow he thought he could hear her calling him, although common sense told him her voice was only in his head.

Hastily, he pulled on jeans and a sweater over his pyjamas, then his boots. He reassured Molly he wouldn’t be long. As he turned towards the door, the room was pitched into sudden darkness. No lamp. No glow from the clock. Just the eerie sound of electric appliances whirring down after their power source had been cut off.

Blackout.

Power failures were nothing unusual out here. A tree could have come down over power lines. Ned grabbed his phone and put it on torch mode. He needed to get downstairs and slam down the lever that would turn on the emergency, diesel-driven generator. Power would be restored to the house within minutes.
