Chapter 15

Anderson Clark

“So, when is the wedding?” Nate asked, plopping down on the couch beside me.

Looking at him out of the corner of my eye, I saw that he was trying desperately to hold back his laughter.

“I can’t tell you because you’re not invited,” I said, with a dead serious expression.

“What? Dude, but I already had my best man speech written. I worked hard on it too,” he said, with mock sadness.

“I already asked Old Man Henderson to be my best man and he accepted,” I said, shrugging.

“He wouldn’t have you accepted if he knew you were the one who dared Easton to steal his tractor,” he said, smiling like an evil genius.

“You wouldn’t,” I said, gasping.

“Oh, but I would,” he replied, nodding.

“Don’t you dare mess this up for me. We have a beautiful bromance happening,” I told him, giving him a pointed look.

We both burst out in laughter. Our friendship was more like a brotherhood. He always had my back and I always had his. We had been best friends since diapers because our fathers before us were best friends and their fathers before them. Well, you get the point.

“What are you thinking about?” Kara asked, walking up behind me and wrapping her arms around my neck.

I inhaled the smell of her vanilla perfume.

“You,” I said, looking up at her.

That made her blush. She had the hardest time taking compliments, but that didn’t stop me from doing it every chance I got.

“You two are too sugary sweet. It makes my teeth hurt,” Nate said, rubbing his jaw.

“I thought all your venom kept you from being affected by sweetness,” Alice said, smacking her gum.

“You know how some people have pet peeves?” Nate asked Kara and me, grinding his teeth together.

“Yeah,” we said, in unison.

“Alice is my pet peeve. Her existence makes me feel like climbing up the wall,” he said, using a lot of crazy hand gestures.

Alice threw a throw pillow at his head.

“Why can’t you two get along?” Kara asked, releasing my neck and walking to take the empty chair beside Alice.

“I think I speak for the both of us when I say that we have no interest in being friends. The only reason we put up
