Sports Water
Sports waters are hypotonic drinks, often made from purified water, with a lower carbohydrate content than sports drinks. Some contain added vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. They tend to have a lighter flavour than sports drinks, to counter the criticism that some sports drinks are too highly flavoured. Having a lower calorie content makes these drinks ideal for less intense training sessions when depleting carbohydrate stores are not an issue. In lower-intensity sessions, where sweat losses are low, sports waters will also be suitable but they are not the best choice when rapid rehydration is necessary. Some sports waters contain extra B vitamins and, although many of these are needed in energy release, there is no evidence to indicate that extra vitamins in these drinks will benefit or aid performance.
Oxygenated water is another product that has hit the market in recent years, with claims that it allows more oxygen to be delivered to the body and so enhances performance. It is questionable how much âextraâ oxygen is present by the time it is drunk, as most of the drinks are sold in plastic bottles, which are permeable to oxygen. Physiologically, it is not possible for oxygenated water to raise the level of oxygen in the blood or muscles, so the benefit of these drinks has to be questioned. However, on-going research is being undertaken in both Great Britain and the USA and there are early indications that some improvements in performance and recovery do occur, although the mechanisms for these improvements are as yet unclear.
