Chapter Twelve

The coffee house buzzed as if the very scent of the beans themselves had created a bit of a contact high that radiated off the patrons. It was pretty noisy between the conversations going on all around him and the loud hiss and gurgle of the espresso equipment being manned behind the glass and wood counter filled with a wide variety of pastries. Steve could feel the wood floors creak under his feet as he added a little cream to his coffee while waiting for the barista-babe to finish Clarissa’s mocha-caramel cappuccino concoction.

Steve glanced over at their table to find Clarissa was staring out the large plate glass window people-watching. She looked great in jeans and a formfitting black sweater that hugged and accentuated her figure. Her long dark hair was bone straight and parted to the side. As usual, she didn’t appear to be wearing much makeup, though he knew from experience that wasn’t the case. When they’d first moved in together, it had shocked him how much time she spent getting ready. He’d have never guessed it, thinking she’d always looked very natural as opposed to a lot of the women he’d dated in the past.

Thinking back on it now, Steve understood the sluttier looking women that had been his ‘type’ over the years had been a subconscious choice on his part. The louder looking the girl, the more heterosexual he’d felt. It was all about the image. The fact his mother hated that type of woman had been a bonus. He knew there would be zero pressure for him to get married while dating that kind of girl. That kind of girl also had a tendency to respond well to the fact he respected them more than most men by not attempting to get into her panties right away.

His stomach cramped, thinking about how manipulative he’d been. It was pretty despicable.

The gal called out his name, signaling his order was ready. Steve tossed the stir stick into the trash and retrieved the tray from the pickup area. As he headed over toward the table, he couldn’t help but think Clarissa appeared slightly anxious.

He could relate.

She smiled warmly as he took a seat across the table from her. Her smile turned into a lip curl when she noticed the chocolate drizzled buttery croissant.

“I’m trying to lose weight, asshole,” she stated, snagging the giant mug off the tray.

“That’s why we’re going to split it.” Steve winked. “Besides, you look incredible.”

She made a pfft sound, dismissing the compliment. “That would’ve meant more a year ago.”

“Should mean more now, I’m not trying to get into your pants anymore.”

“Don’t remind me,” Clarissa said, her lip curling into a pout. “Of course in retrospect, you probably never were so I should get over it, right?”

“Don’t do that,” Steve said. “I fucked up, but don’t ever think the attraction wasn’t mutual. There was desire for you on my end, Clarissa.”

“So hot I turned a gay man straight?” She sighed. “For a little while, at any rate.
