Chapter Eight
Noah
Rather than go into Whithowe, or even Penrith, Noah drove them both up to Carlisle. While essentials could be bought in the other two places, there was far more variety in the city. Noah very much enjoyed being able to spoil his mate. Having enough clothes to wear were needed items, and he could have used the pack funds set aside for that, but he wanted to use his own money.
It was amusing to watch Astley reach for clothes to try on, only to have the trousers end inches above his ankles with the few pairs he was even able to pull up over his muscular thighs. Noah choked back a laugh and took them back, exchanging them for something more appropriate after borrowing a tape measure from the attendant and checking what size would actually be required now. Astley needed an entirely new wardrobe, as not even his old socks fit him anymore. They would return the outfit Astley had been forced to borrow from his dad the night before, at some point.
Noah had worried Astley might find the sheer number of people in the city rather overwhelming, but he watched closely and all he saw was excitement and a sparkle in his mate’s eyes, which thrilled him. Noah’s lion felt as though it was basking in the sun, very satisfied at being able to provide for Astley’s needs.
The Lanes was a lovely shopping centre. It had nicely paved paths and high, airy ceilings, for the most part, with a wide variety of shops. There were not many clothing options for men inside, only one or two unless you counted the department stores, so after a quick run-through, they headed out into the town centre. It was a decent enough day. After the sunny start, it had turned cloudy but it had also warmed and there was no rain.
They walked back to the car a couple of hours later, laden down with bags. Astley’s borrowed clothes were in one of the bags, and he wore some of his new ones. The stonewashed and artfully faded black jeans hugged his arse tightly and had made Noah drool when Astley had first tried them on and he had insisted on them being among the items to be bought. Noah was still drooling. The maroon skinny vest and charcoal-grey cardigan looked great with the jeans. The style should have been more suited to the teenager that he had been, but somehow it worked on him incredibly well. His new stylishly shaggy haircut enhanced his looks. He drew admiring glances from everyone as they walked.
Noah moved the car closer to the cinema. There was a small car park just off Botchergate, around the corner from the local Walkabout bar, so he parked there and they set off on foot.
It only took a couple of minutes to get from where they left the car to the cinema, but Noah noticed some dirty looks, drawn by their clasped hands, which were aimed their way along with smiles from the more accepting.
