Chapter Seven
Jake stood in Chance and Tucker’s kitchen with his hands planted firmly on his hips. This wasn’t going to be awful, because that wasn’t an option. He was going to make a wonderful dinner, and everyone would eat it and be happy because it was delicious. That was the plan, and that was how it was going to go.
Tor and Tucker had gone shopping with his list, and now all there really was to do was get familiar with the kitchen and not fuck up.
Easy.
“Okay.” He smoothed a hand over his belly, flattening out his t-shirt. “I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to get personal with your cupboards and drawers.”
“Feel free.” Chance waved at the cabinets. “There’s a walk-in pantry, too.” He opened the door and pointed inside. “The Corn Pops don’t belong to me.”
“I would be shocked if they did.” That was true. They might not have spent much time together, but between texting and the last couple of days Jake figured he had a pretty accurate picture of who the sugar junkie in their family might be. He looked into the pantry with interest. “I’d lay money on the energy drinks being both of yours, and the coconut water just for you. Which, by the way, I’m going to be using.”
“Wow.” Chance looked impressed. “I guess there’s a lot you can tell about a guy just by looking at his food. Go ahead, anything you need in there is yours.” He scooped up Smokey, who had jumped on the counter and was sitting on a stray dish towel. “Do you want company, or is it better to leave you in peace to create?”
“Oh, God. Please stay.” Jake couldn’t imagine being left alone to do anything, ever. His life was too full of Tor coming and going, along with various people wandering into his house at all hours. Besides, it would feel odd to just be playing in someone else’s kitchen without them there. “You can tell me all about everything. And by everything I mean that stunning collection of CDs and DVDs. Favorite movie of all time?” He started pulling out drawers and gathering up utensils he might want to use, laying them out on the countertop.
“Endless Summer.” Chance smiled slightly. “If you say you haven’t heard of it, you’re in the majority.”
“Oh, good.” Jake had been expecting... well, nothing in particular really, but certainly something he’d heard of. “What’s it about?” He started in on the cupboards, looking for cutting boards and pots.
“Documentary about two guys who go on a surf trip around the world. Australia, Hawaii, South Africa... bunch of places. Basically, following summer.” Chance sounded slightly dreamy. “It kind of gave birth to the ‘travel and surf’ idea. Finding the perfect wave. Searching for uncrowded water.”
“Surfing.” Jake thought about it as he pulled out a large mixing bowl. “I don’t get it, honestly. The idea of that much water is kind of terrifying.” And water that didn’t stop moving, that you were trying to stand on, was even more so.
