Chapter Nine
Fred watched Remy sleep. They’d fallen asleep with the lights on, so he had an unobstructed view of Remy. The dark circles under Remy’s eyes had almost completely gone away, and he didn’t look so close to starving anymore.
He was handsome, though not in the same way he used to be. Remy could have and often had been described as pretty back when he’d gone by the name of Martine. Remy’d been a spoiled boy then, hiding under a fake name he’d thought made him more glamorous. Fred had shaken his head at that when Remy told him why he’d used the name Martine. Remy, as a name, was pretty sexy, in Fred’s opinion. But Remy had been underage when it came to booze and employment in the club he’d wanted to work in, so the fake ID had been made with an equally fake name.
Then he’d handed himself over to Grey. Fred didn’t know the asshole’s last name, or where he lived. Still, if he ever got the chance, Fred would pound the jerk into the pavement. Taking in a boy and taking advantage of him. Fred knew Remy hadn’t been innocent, at least not sexually, when he’d moved in with Grey. He’d still been very young and immature, undeveloped as a man, as a person, period. There was no doubt in Fred’s mind about it—Grey had taken advantage, and he’d likely have dumped Remy sooner than later anyway, because he’d gotten older and wiser.
But to toss him out with nothing for crimes Remy’s father had committed? That shit didn’t fly with Fred, not at all.
Fred stroked back some of Remy’s hair, moving it off his forehead. Remy smacked his lips together then snorted before curling up onto his side, facing Fred. Remy had stolen the sheets, which was part of why Fred had woken up. He’d been chilled. Seeing Remy wrapped in the bedding had warmed Fred considerably, and he didn’t have the heart to wake Remy up by tugging on the sheets.
Remy’s lashes fluttered, and he opened his eyes suddenly, gasping and jerking, his legs shooting out stiffly.
Fred reeled back, startled, and he yelped as he went over the side of the bed. His ass hit the floor and his head hit the wall at the same time. “Ow!” He blinked, mildly stunned.
Remy, wide-eyed and frowning, stared at him from the bed. “Are you okay?”
Fred felt the back of his head. There was only a slight bump forming. Hopefully it wouldn’t get any bigger. “More embarrassed than anything else.”
That brought Remy from frowning to out and out scowling. He sat up, legs off the side of the bed, and held a hand out to Fred. “It’s my fault, isn’t it? I was asleep, then I woke up and it was that shitty, startle-yourself-awake kind of thing where it’s like you’re falling but you know you really aren’t. I fucking hate that.”
“It’s no one’s fault but my own,” Fred replied as he placed his hand in Remy’s. “I’m the one that jumped like an idiot.
