In Rudolf Arnheim’s (1936) seminal work, he comments that a speaker who simply passes on information is a “foreign body in a radio production” and therefore unnecessary (198). A point that is as true now as it was in the thirties. As indicated, the intimacy of a recording and the poignancy of interviewees’ recollections can sometimes be compromised by the intrusion of a presenter. McLeish (2005) believes the decision to not have a presenter can create a more natural flow, which conveniently links sections together and drives the narrative forward. While he accepts “this is not easy to do”, the results can often be “more atmospheric” than using a traditional presenter (268).
