KATIE

I go from the excitement of having brunch with Cole to the incredibly boring task of unboxing and shelving new textbooks for the next semester in the back of the bookstore. My colleague, Jenny, is chatting nonstop about her boyfriend and how flaky he is. I get the feeling he's not that into her, but I don't know how to say that without hurting her feelings.

"And then last night, he was supposed to come over, but he didn't. I was calling him and calling him. I must have called twenty times. Then, this morning, he texts me to say he fell asleep, and that's why he didn't turn up."

"Shit, that blows," I say.

"I'd cooked him dinner too."

I take a deep breath. "Does he have a habit of falling asleep?" I say, hoping that a little gentle questioning might lead her to ask questions of her own.

"Sometimes," she says.

"I bet he was really apologetic about letting you down," I say.

She shakes her head, dusting her hands off against her jeans. "Not really." She sounds thoughtful, and that's all I wanted. "Do you think he might not be telling me the truth?"

I put my hands up. "Who knows, Jenny. I guess I'm just a lot more suspicious than you."

She sighs. "Yeah, maybe I need to be a bit more like you. What if he's cheating on me? What if he wasn't really asleep last night, but he was over at some other girl's house, eating dinner with her?"

"Maybe you should do a little investigation on the down-low. Just turn up when he says he's doing something and see if he's telling the truth," I say.

Jenny nods. "That's a great idea. I'd rather know, to be honest, Katie. There's no point being with someone who doesn't really want to be with you."

"Is there ever a time that relationships aren't ridiculously complicated," I say.

"I thought you were sworn off men…or at least anything serious," Jenny says, tearing open another box.

"I am," I say, but even as the words come out of my mouth, I think of Cole. "It's fun to have a little fling, but love isn't for me. At least, not right now."

"Love can sneak up on you," Jenny says.

"Only if you let it."

"You're so strong, though, Katie. I'm not like you. Even if I think I'm just going to have some fun, my heart ends up getting involved."

No matter my denial, her words have an echo of truth. Cole has gone from an annoying Jackass to a fling to a repeat fuck buddy, and now I don't even know what he is.

My stepbrother-to-be. Someone I care about even though I don't want to.

The way he treats me tells me that he feels more for me than he's letting on, to me or to himself.

I haven't been spending much time in my dorm room because most of my time has been spent in Cole's pool house. He comes to pick me up, and then, because I don't want my mom or Lance to know that we're together, he makes sure to sneak me out the next morning before anyone else is up.
