MOURNING JACK S.A. Meade 86
I wondered which of the well-heeled, well-fed people seated around the table was Mr Kingston. There were a couple of men who came close to my original imagined picture, red-faced wealthy countrymen, sweating in tweeds beside their tiny wives.
“Here we are, Mr Kingston.” Becky was all smiles.
The third man rose, slender and well dressed, the racing tag still dangling from his lapel. He smiled and offered his hand. “Ah, nice to meet you, er…”
“Ade.” I shook his hand.
“Would you like to join us?”
Before I could refuse, Becky placed another chair at the table and Audrey appeared with a wine glass and a bottle of very expensive Hawkes Bay Cabernet.
“Thank you.”
Becky winked and walked away, leaving me alone at a table with five strangers.
Mr Kingston poured the wine. “That was an excellent meal.”
“Thank you.”
“How long have you been here now?”
“About four weeks.”
He slid the platter of cheese and biscuits towards me. “Have you settled in all right?”
“Yes, fine. It helps being able to live above the shop.” I helped myself to a glob of runny brie and spread it across a cream cracker.
Kingston’s guests talked in low murmurs among themselves. Audrey brought coffee and petits fours.
“I enjoyed that meal tremendously.”
“What did you have?”
“I had the carbonnade. It was very nicely done.”
“It’s a popular dish. I’m keeping it on the menu all year round, I think.”
“I think that’s a good idea.” He grinned. “I could eat it again. I don’t suppose there’s any leftovers, are there?”
“There are. I can get some for you. It’s even better when it’s reheated. “
“I wouldn’t mind. I don’t have much time for cooking.”
I waved Audrey over. “Can you ask Mikey to put about three portions of carbonnade into some containers for Mr Kingston?”
“Yes, Chef.”
