Chapter Three
I awoke with the sound of someone calling to me. Jonas.
I was alone. I shot up and looked around. “Damn it, Dmitri!” I was naked, and sticky with my own come. My body still sang with the aftermath of pleasure. The bed in front of me had been completely demolished, the sheets and pillows, as well as the mattress, all on the floor.
Jonas. Come to me. Help me.
I got dressed quickly. Was Dmitri in trouble? I searched for my gun, for the silver bullet. I couldn’t find anything. The front door stood open. I shivered as I walked onto the porch. The only light came from the moon above. I didn’t want to do this, hunt down Dmitri in the dark, but I had no choice. “Dmitri?” I called out. “Where are you? You can’t escape. Let me take the bloodwork back, and…”
And then I remembered. We weren’t alone. He was here, too.
“Jonas.”
I gasped, turned quickly and took a step back. I almost fell off the porch when I saw him, crouching just above me on the roof of the cabin. “Swan,” I mouthed.
He looked down into my eyes. He didn’t try to hide his teeth. They were out, and deadly. “It’s been a long time, Jonas. I’m sorry to have neglected you. Now, you will help me, and I will take care of you as I am bound to.”
The hatred I had for him bubbled to the surface. “You took everything from me.”
“Yes, but look what I gave you in return. Now, where is he?”
“Looking for me, Swan?”
I turned. Dmitri was on the ground behind me.
Swan swooped down from the roof and stood close to me.
“Jonas,” Dmitri hissed. “Leave. Get away from him.”
Swan reached out and touched my arm. He pulled me to him. “You are mine,” he said. “You will do as I say. As your maker, I can command you.”
“Jonas, look at me,” Dmitri demanded.
I felt my strength drain. I leaned against Swan as if drunk.
Swan laughed. “You have no power over my creation.”
“I have the power of love,” Dmitri replied softly.
And I heard him whisper in my ear, “ Remember, Jonas, I love you. If you love me, run!”
I broke away from Swan. I began to run, but I was still weak. I stumbled and fell, then heard Swan cry out. I looked around over my shoulder to see Dmitri and Swan locked in battle in the night sky. I closed my eyes, then opened them again.
Dmitri stood on the roof, dangling Swan’s head by the hair.
“Oh…Gawd,” I muttered, but the strength began to come back into my limbs. The spell that was Swan was broken. I got to my feet and walked quickly toward the cabin, but Dmitri had disappeared.
I glanced around to where I was sure Swan’s headless body had lain, but there was no body. I leaned down and peered closer to see a pile of ashes. A brisk breeze picked up suddenly, and they disappeared. Just like that.
But I had a problem.
