Isaiah couldn’t remember the last time he’d had so much fun and laughed so hard with his dad. Not since he was a little kid. Some of it was Joel’s energy and joy, but mostly it was Isaiah and Thomas simply getting along. Teasing. Joking. Cooking.
Cooking together wasn’t something they’d ever done before the heart attack, and Isaiah loved it now.
The kitchen table was covered in pages of Joel’s handwritten notes. Every recipe, every tweak to an ingredient or amount, every idea on how to cook what and when for maximization of time and energy. Joel’s goal was to have a soft open with three savory items and one sweet, then slowly add to the menu as business took off.
And the food. Every countertop had food on it, half-empty containers, and open bread bags, and the chaos was part of the fun. He and Joel enjoyed casual touches and teasing as they worked, and Isaiah had to fight against kissing him more than once. But Isaiah had promised not to maul Joel in front of his dad, so he behaved.
While they cooked, they also discussed food truck names, tossing out ideas to see what stuck. Isaiah also did some research online, so they didn’t accidentally use one that was already trademarked. Around three in the afternoon, Thomas excused himself to the den for a nap.
After giving his dad five minutes to settle on the other side of the curtains, Isaiah backed Joel into the refrigerator door and kissed him soundly. “Been wanting to do that all day,” he whispered.
“Same.” Joel kissed him again. “Sorry I fell asleep last night.”
“Don’t worry about it, you had a long day. You okay we slept together?”
“Yup. Although I usually require a guy at least buy me dinner first.”
Isaiah laughed. He loved how easy it was to laugh with Joel. “I can buy you dinner tonight.”
“Yeah? Food truck tacos?”
“No, let’s go out to a place with walls and a front door. It can be a casual date, no expectations when we get home. After all the cooking we’ve done today, I want someone to serve me.”
“I hear you. Thank you so much for all this. I mean it, Isaiah. Without you and your dad, I’d be completely lost.”
“I don’t know, I bet your friend Bran would have helped you out.”
Joel’s eyes twinkled. “You know I was baiting you with what I said about Bran, right? He’s hot, but I’m not attracted to him.”
“Good, because I like being with you. You’re fun and fiery, and you never give up.”
“Ha! I knew you were jealous.”
“A little.” Isaiah leaned in and plundered Joel’s mouth until he was dizzy from it. “I don’t like to share.”
“So you’re claiming me?”
“Maybe. I’m not looking for anything serious right now, Joel, but I enjoy being with you, and I’d like to be with you more. Hang out, call it casual dating if you want. I think we could both use the distraction and stress relief.”
“Same.” Joel rested his forehead on Isaiah’s shoulder. “I’m still processing being dumped by Steve.
