CHAPTER EIGHT
âLIED to you?â
Ianthe could see straight away that he didnât understand. That upset her even more. Was she so unimportant to him that he couldnât even remember that he had told her he worked as a photographer for his living? Not as the head of a doubtless multimillion-dollar shipping company!
Perhaps this was the wake-up call that she needed, to help her come to her senses and make her see that Lysander was simply playing with herâusing herâto help pass some time whilst he was on vacation. To think that she was anything more to him than a holiday fling was simply being naïve. A slow tear tracked its way down her cheek and she wiped it away impatiently, furious with herself for giving way to emotion in front of a man who clearly was not worth the heartache.
âYou said you were a photographer. You led me to believe that was how you worked for your living. Never at any point did you correct me in that assumption. You lied to me, Lysander! Do you really expect me to believe that you somehow forgot to tell me what you really do? Youâre the head of a wealthy shipping business, your family are so rich they can send a huge great luxury yacht to take you to Athens just for a dinner party, and you didnât even mention it!â
His handsome face looked pensive but not unduly concerned at her outburst. âI may not have told you the whole truth about what I do, Ianthe, but you didnât need to know. Does it matter? After all, you never asked me to elaborate. And in any case, what are you getting so worked up about? Do you honestly expect me to believe that the fact that I am wealthy is a problem for you? You would be a rare woman amongst your sex if that was the case. Itâs usually the other way around.â He shrugged, smiling, and Ianthe itched to wipe the clear evidence of his impossible arrogance right off his too-confident face.
âSome of us have principles!â
Raising her anguished gaze to his, Ianthe hugged her flimsy wrap across her chest and wished this crushing sense of disappointment and betrayal would just go away and leave her alone. She wished she could have fooled herself for a little while longer that she really had found something very special with this man. It was now clear to her that he thought very differently about their affair.
âNot all women are impressed by wealth for its own sake,â she told him bitterly. âIt was you I was attracted to, Lysander, not your bank balance, so you didnât need to hide it. Some of us think that not deceiving people is a lot more important than whether you have money or not! And if youâre suggesting I would want to be with you for the sake of your money, thatâs an insult. As though Iâd just been using you for your wealth! It must have been a very lonely existence for you if thatâs been your experience with women so far.
