Support for and participation in the Umbrella Movement. The 2014 survey asked: “An occupy movement has occurred in Hong Kong recently. Do you personally support this movement?” The term “occupy movement” was used because it was a commonly used label in everyday discourse at the time. The answers were registered on a five-point Likert scale ranging from 1 = very unsupportive to 5 = very supportive (M = 3.06, SD = 1.47). Those who were very supportive, supportive, or “so-so” toward the movement were then asked if they had gone to the occupied areas to support the movement. The answers include “1 = no,” “2 = have gone there one day,” “3 = have gone there two to three days,” and “4 = have gone there more than three days.” The opponents to the movement were presumed not to have gone to the occupied areas to support the movement. They scored 1. 8.5%, 8.4%, and 5.7% of all respondents that had gone to the occupied areas one day, two to three days, and more than three days, respectively (M = 1.42, SD = 0.87).
