PAULA SAT PATIENTLY in the waiting room, watching cartoons on the overhead television fixed to the wall. She found it quite amusing to be one of only three adults in the room sporting casts on injured limbs. Erin was one of the others, and a young man, who just hobbled in, was the third. Her amusement soon turned into a headache as the six or so youngsters, heedless of their casts on legs and arms, proceeded to chase each other among the waiting room chairs. Thankfully, the parents finally corralled their offspring. She was sure she was next, since Erin was in the cast room having her cast removed now.

At this thought, the green door opened, and Erin appeared, her cast replaced with a plastic splint. She waved to Paula, who clambered to her feet using the crutches.

"Not totally free, I see," Paula said.

"No, and you won't be either, so don't get smug. I have a long list of strengthening exercises I need to do for the next couple of weeks, then the splint comes off. Now, my dear, go get that thing cut off, and we can celebrate our near-freedom from the dreaded unreachable itch."

"That sounds like a plan. When we get back to the ranch, I'm headed for a nice hot bubble bath first thing."

"Oooh, want some company?" Erin whispered.

"I might be persuaded to share." Paula made her way to the cast room for her turn at plaster removal. Twenty minutes later she was back, sporting a brace that covered her leg from thigh to ankle. She would only need her crutches for the next few days until she got her balance. She'd be more than happy to toss them.
