Chapter 5
We got to the festival after the first few bands had played. The parking was insane and there was dust flying in the air. You could hear the bass from the back of the parking lot.
I couldn’t believe I was going for free and that I was going dressed as a chick. I knew this would be unlike any other year’s experience. I wondered if I’d get hit on or get dared to make out with someone. Everything would be different now that I was wearing a skirt.
The closer we walked toward the fairgrounds, the crazier the scene got. There were sculptures and rides and tents for miles. And everywhere I turned there were hot chicks that were already half-baked or wasted. I shook with excitement as we walked through security.
Nathan assured me I didn’t have to stay with him the entire time, but I couldn’t think of who else I would hang with. I couldn’t tell my friends that I had shown up as a girl. I figured I’d tell them later on that I snuck in somehow and saw the show, but that I couldn’t get a cell signal or something. I knew I had time to make up a good excuse later.
We swiftly entered the crowds of costumed people. Everyone was laughing and swaying and it was easy to feel at home and accepted. I couldn’t feel bad about dressing like a chick when everyone was dressed in crazy, wild costumes. It was one giant masquerade festival. The more out of body you acted, the more you were adored.
I was surprised to see how much a guy like Nathan lost himself in this kind of crowd. I wouldn’t have pegged him for someone that liked electronic concerts but I started to feel like he felt included here as well. He seemed to blend in perfectly with the waving arms and swaying hips around us.
We didn’t talk much during the festival. We grabbed some beers and had some laughs and we even met quite a few friendly strangers. It was as fantastic of a time as any other year, except this time I had a secret identity. Not one single person seemed to peg me as a dude or, if they did, they didn’t call me out on it.
The day was nearing its end and I my head was spinning from all the excitement. I told Nathan I was going to wander through the crowd and he waved me off. I wanted to disappear amidst the people and really become a part of everything. I closed my eyes and stretched out my arms, brushing past dancing bodies as I walked through the chaos.
That’s when I recognized his voice. “Hey there sexy!” called Jason. My eyes shot open wide and I turned toward him. “What’s your name?”
He didn’t recognize me. I can’t believe he didn’t recognize me. “Crystal,” I replied in a high tone. Jason didn’t look wasted, but he still didn’t seem to know it was me underneath all the makeup.
