We’d ended up sleeping under the stars, but Kesia woke me early with news that Azaran wanted us home to prepare to leave for Davis’s family’s house. His father, James Reid, was sure that he could do a reasonable translation of the book from Q’s home. Half asleep still, Q clutched onto me while Kesia flew us home and out into where we could see Kyla with her brother and Eeli in the calma plant patch.
As I helped Q off of Kesia’s back, I said, “I want you to meet my favorite human girl. She wasn’t around yesterday.”
“Sounds good, gigantor.” He smiled up at me, finally starting to revive after our flight home.
“Well, there’s the strongest and most dashing dragon rider around,” said Eeli before he and Christian started cackling.
“Kesia!” I yelled at her.
A slightly bemused Q tugged his ear and asked, “How did he know that?”
A laughing Christian managed to choke out, “You know how the dragons talk to each other telepathically?” Q nodded, recognition dawning on his face. “The first thing Kesia did this morning was tell the other dragons what Kite said last night. And they told us.”
Eeli teased, “And you’re never going to live it down, Kite. Never, you strong and dashing dragon rider.”
My face burned hotter than Sindri’s breath from embarrassment, when Q said, “Gigantor, you won’t ever live it down as long as I’m around. You know why?” I blinked. “Because you’re my strong and dashing dragon rider. And your story last night was perfection. As painful as the night before was, you made last night one of the best in my life telling me your fairy tale”—he gave Kesia a stern stare, even though she was still in warrior form—“that was especially for me.”
I cupped his chin with my hand. “It was about you, too, Quentin.”
“It better have been, Kite.” Then he kissed my cheek.
Kesia shrunk down to wyrmling size and jumped toward me with a flutter of wings, then wrapped them around me while she clutched at my clothes with her talons. I’m sorry ma’miardhe. I forgot how complicated you humans are. I didn’t mean to make you feel bad. I was telling the others how you wouldn’t claim your mate, and then all of a sudden you were being so mushy. I would never hurt you on purpose. I’m sorry.
It’s okay, Kesia. You didn’t know how my brothers would be. I hugged her back.
“Sorry, Kite,” Eeli and Christian mumbled, drawing my attention back to them. But it was Kyla’s huge smile that captured my attention.
“What?” I asked her.
“Nothing.” Turning to Q, she said, “It’s nice to officially meet you. I’m Kyla, and you’re good enough for my gentle giant.”
His lopsided grin appeared and his brown eyes twinkled. “It’s nice to meet you, Kyla. I’m Quentin, but you can call me Q. And thank you for your approval.”
“You know, her opinion does carry weight,” I teased.
“Oh, I figured that out listening to all the stories you told me about her just last night.
