"Lio!"
A hand clamped my shoulder and I jumped. I turned. Cars were honking around me. Kord was looking at me with utter concern.
"Are you okay?"
I couldn't speak.
"Lio. I went mad when I couldn't find you, but the old spirit warrior instincts kicked in. I love how connected we are." He looked at me with such love, holding up a hand to the irate driver laying on his horn behind us and murmured, "Get in, baby."
I finally made my feet move and got in the SUV, climbing over the driver's seat into the passenger side. I sat staring ahead at the moving traffic. It would have been easy to dismiss it as a hallucination but I'd had these experiences before.
"Baby, please, what the fuck happened?" Kord was driving all over the place. "Talk to me." He kept glancing from the road to me, and back again.
"Oh, shit. You had a time jump, didn't you." It was a statement, not a question. He pulled over quickly to the shoulder of the road. I sat beside him, shaking. I kept seeing those poor poi dogs. What miserable lives most of them had. Fed mostly vegetables because meat was deemed too expensive to feed them, they had flat heads and sluggish behavior.
Except for my dog. I'd loved that boy. I'd fed him meat from my own portion at meal times. And chicken and fish. I could see his face now. He'd loved to run with me and I knew… I remembered, he, like all the other dogs and pigs that were considered family pets, had been taken as a sacrifice on the Makahiki.
I began to worry about Louie's dog, who'd started life as my birth mother's dog. Oh, God. She was home alone.
"Maks," I said, unable to stop the tears falling down my face. I was turning into a big, blubbering girl these days.
Kord held me as I told him everything.
"Your dog was a girl," he told me.
"A girl?" I tried to remember.
"You blocked it, baby. You were devastated over losing her. She had wiggly hips and you called her Hula."
We stared at one another. Lola had wiggly hips.
"We're going home to get her and we'll take her to Lahala," Kord said. "She won't let anything happen to that dog."
He drove like a maniac all the way to Lai'e, clutching my hand.
"It's all right," he kept saying. "It's going to be okay."
We kept kissing and hugging each other, apologizing for our silly argument in the hospital. When we got to the house, Lola was standing inside the doorway, waiting for us, her leash gripped between her teeth.
Kord ran around organizing her things as I walked her out front.
She licked my face incessantly as we drove to Lahala's house. I tried not to think of Hula, the dog I'd loved. I cradled little Lola in my arms. Louie loved his dog. She loved him. Nothing would happen to her.
When we reached our landlady's house, she seemed surprised to see us.
"I'm not sure I can take her.
