After dropping Milo off at his friend’s, we head to New World supermarket. We both grab carts, then awkwardly look at each other.

Jack pauses and returns his to the rack. He returns confidently. “What do you think of us cooking together this week?”

My belly gives an involuntary skip. “For our health?”

“And to save on dinner dishes and scheduling time for the kitchen.”

I snicker. “Yeah, all those microwave meals take forever to prepare. And the dishes . . .”

He bumps me away from the cart and takes over wheeling it. “Smart ass.”

The stupid grin at my face stretches into a smile. “Okay, you head straight to the meat counter and queue up before the lines hit.”

“Lines?”

“Talia says it’s in my mind, but whenever I come here, there’s always a long ass line for meat.”

He laughs. “Never noticed.”

“So have fun. I’ll meet you there with some basics.”

Before he can reply, I dash off into the supermarket and pluck groceries off shelves.

At the meat counter, Jack is plopping fresh steaks into the cart. He doesn’t even look up to know I’m there.

“You better be holding something green in your arms,” he says.

Um . . . “I’m an idiot. I do have a block of vintage cheese, if that counts?”

“Drop it in the cart. Let’s grab some spinach and mushrooms.”

My lips twist in distaste as I lower the food into the cart by a family-sized box of Weet-Bix. My tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth seeing that large box. “Spinach, cool. What about Brussels sprouts? Or cauliflower?”

“You don’t like mushrooms?”

“There’s only one mushroom-shaped thing I—”

“Cauliflower’s fine.”

I sidle to Jack’s side and it’s my turn to bump him to the side. I push the cart away. Jack gives me a nervous glance at my controlling the cart, and I shake my head. “No soft drinks while we’re under the same roof, I promise.”

I don’t know what the hell possessed me to say that, but Jack’s relieved grin makes it worth it.

Also, if I give a little here, maybe Jack will give a little, too? Maybe he won’t feel quite so busy and want to look after Milo even one of the days I’m working?

“Tuna,” he says.

“Sure, how much?” The end of my car thumps against something metallic. I whip my head toward a wall of bloody tuna. It’s wobbling.

For fuck’s sake. Again?

I lunge forward. Behind me, Jack’s laugh booms down the aisle.

I bathe in the electrical dance tickling my nape. His hand closes next to mine on the handle. “How about instead of darting off and grabbing things separately, we do it together?”

I rub my nape. “I’d like to do things together. Now. This whole week.”

“Whole week?”

“I’ll pay you, of course.”

He frowns. “Pay me for what?”

“It’s just with school holidays . . . I’m not sure how to manage with Milo. And I thought, since you have a break too, maybe you could look after him sometimes—”

“Sure,” Jack says.
