“Still,” Houston said. "I think it would be best if you disappeared

for a while."

“I’ll go to my sisters. She lives in Dalton Falls. Just call me when

they’ve captured him.” Mrs. Grant looked near tears. Before Devin

knew what he was doing, he wrapped his arms around her, giving her

a hug and thanking her.

“Just get your life together,” she said to him. “That’s how you can

thank me.”

“He will,” Houston said before he led Devin and Jordan from the

building. Devin glanced around, afraid a SWAT team would show up

and arrest him for taking Jordan away. It was too good to be true. He

had his son. Jordan stood right next to him, holding Devin’s hand.

“Are we going home, Daddy?” His son stared up at Devin with

those big blue eyes that had always suckered him in.

“We’re going home.”

Jordan smiled. “Good. I don’t like this place very much.”

Devin squatted and pulled Jordan into his arms, relishing the fact

that he held his son in his arms. “You’ll never have to leave me

again.”

“We need to get moving,” Houston reminded him. “I saw

someone in a car yesterday, sitting across the street from this building.

I have a feeling it was Cyrus.”

Devin straightened and hurried his son into the truck, buckling

him in the middle before Houston drove away.

“We’ll have to get him a car seat,” Houston said, “but right now

we’re going straight to the house.”

“Good idea,” Devin said. He scanned the streets as Houston

drove, glancing down at Jordan every few seconds to assure himself

this was real. His son stared up at Houston, as if Devin’s mate

fascinated him.

“Who are you?” Jordan asked.

“My name’s Houston.”

Jordan eyeballed Houston. “You’re big.”
