Chapter 13

He might be going to hell, but this was the way the cards had fallen. He should’ve known he wasn’t the only one after Sophia Carson. He should’ve known that others would have even more nefarious purposes than his.

“Leo, I need you to explain yourself right now. What are you talking about?”

“Kellen Brecken. That’s the guy who was just in your house. What do you know about him?”

Before she could answer, the blood drained from her face. “He…He threatened me at the party. Talking about my heritage or something.”

“His parents and younger sister were killed by a car bomb set off by your father a decade ago.”

“What? How do you know any of this?”

“Because I know Carlos Carson. I know his friends, and I know his enemies.”

“And you know his family…” completed Sophia softly, understanding coming over her face like a shadow. “That is why you’re here. Why you were so interested in me. I knew there was an ulterior motive, and this is it. You were going to use me somehow. Just like the guy in my house was.”

“The difference is I didn’t shoot at you.”

She just shook her head as she fell back against the passenger seat. “Please take me to the police station.”

Police station…the same police who had let Carlos out on a technicality? The same police who had let him get away with murder after murder even before that? No. There was no way in hell that Leo was going to let Sophia put her life in their hands. Especially not when this way he could keep her safe and get what he wanted.

“You hold on,” he said as he pulled out his phone and started to dial. A man like Carlos Carson wasn’t easy to get hold of. Any phone that he had registered to him wouldn’t be his daily go-to phone. It had taken a lot of his most deplorable contacts to get him this private number, and Leo had long since memorized it.

He wasn’t going to lie to Sophia and tell her he was taking her to the cops when he had zero intention of doing that. But maybe if she understood how much danger she was in, she’d be more open to suggestions. So he hit Send and would let the cards fall where they would, making sure to put it on speakerphone. Hopefully, Carlos would help Sophia see that this was a problem better handled privately.

It only rang once before someone answered. Ballsy for Carlos to answer an unknown number. Unless he already somehow knew it was Leo…

“You’ve got a lot of nerve, calling this number.”

Yep. He knew it was him calling. “It’s an emergency. I’m here with Sophia.”

There was a pause on the other end before Carlos growled. “You really want to play this game?”

Well, yeah. He had. But things had changed. “I’m keeping her safe. Kellen Brecken just broke into Sophia’s house and started shooting at her.”

“He didn’t start shooting right away,” added Sophia, basically pointlessly.

“Sophia, is this man holding you against your will?”

She blinked a few times and looked to Leo.
