Gideon slipped in and out of consciousness on his bumpy ride to…he had no clue where the hell he was going. He could still smell Ross near him. He could feel the man’s energy and his spirit. There was a lot of his energy being pumped into Gideon’s body, but he still found it painful to even try to wake up.

He kept trying, though. He was always right beneath consciousness, in that weird spot where he knew he was clocked out, but no matter what he did he couldn’t wake up from his half dreams.

He had to keep trying, no matter how much it hurt, because he could smell several different alphas all around his mate. That had to be who was carrying him, because it sure as hell couldn’t be Ross doing that all by himself and going so fast.

“Ross,” he said, managing to scratch through the wall that separated him from the outside world just long enough to get that word out, but then he couldn’t say anything else, and Ross’s voice sounded so damn far away.

“You’re okay, baby, we’re almost there. You’re going to be okay.”

There was another voice, one that he didn’t recognize, and that made him even more antsy as he struggled to wake up. Christ, he felt like he was dying. What did that fucking alpha do to him?

“We’ll be back at the house in another hour or so.”

“Can’t we get there any faster?”

Were they going back to Ross’s pack? Fuck. He supposed he should be relieved that at least it wasn’t Lawrence’s alphas who caught them, but still, that relief was small and weak, all things considered.

At least these alphas weren’t as likely to want to hurt Ross. Immediately that is. Gideon still had to get his ass in gear to confirm that for himself.

He slipped away again, and when he woke up the next time, he really woke up. He managed to snap his eyes open and everything, and when he did, he shot up from the…

Bed? He was actually in bed.

The unfamiliar scent of the room threw him for a few seconds, and it took him another few seconds before he realized that Ross was beside him.

Not in bed. Judging by the bandages that were all over Gideon’s body, his mate had thought that would be a bad idea, but he was sitting in a chair, bent over a desk that was beside the bed Gideon was in. His head was down, using one of his arms as a pillow, while his other hand was reaching across and to the bed.

Gideon looked down and realized that their hands were joined. He was still receiving energy and strength from his mate, which was likely the thing that was tiring the hell out of him.

Gideon was shocked that the alphas in this house even let them stay in the same room. What the hell was going on?

He hated to wake his mate. The man clearly needed the sleep from all the energy he was giving.
