Chapter Nine

I’ve been sitting around my apartment, torturing myself with the idea of Alexei doing porn for Dylan. It makes me sick to my stomach.

Last night, after Jeannine and Alexei took off together for their usual three o’clock snack, I stayed behind and had a talk with Dylan. But no matter what I said, Dylan wouldn’t discuss the issue with me at all. He asked me to stay out of his new business or find another job. The old pig wouldn’t tell me about Alexei’s implication in this porn site Dylan runs, but by the shifty looks he kept giving me, I know he’s managed to recruit Alexei, and that it’s only a matter of time before Alexei becomes his main star.

Dylan knows the kind of hits his crummy site would get if he had Alexei as his main attraction. My mind keeps showing me images of Alexei kneeling before a man who doesn’t deserve him. I don’t want strange men to touch him. I don’t want him to be used.

Dimitry should step up to the plate and do something before it’s too late and Alexei does something he’ll regret. Alexei obviously doesn’t know what he’s getting himself into. He’s lost—too young to understand the consequences. I’m disappointed in my best friend lately. I tried talking to Dimitry earlier, but Dimitry insists that Alexei isn’t his business anymore, and even asked me to stop reporting everything Alexei does.

On top of that, I think Dimitry is already seeing someone else. I know him well enough—he never stays single more than a month and I suspect he’s moved on to another project, some young guy in need of support. Now that Dimitry’s father has moved into his house, I realize Dimitry is going to remain in the closet for the rest of his life and keep dating men who can’t demand more from him because they’re vulnerable and lacking a real support system.

I always thought Dimitry was being preyed on by these guys, but now I’m starting to think that all this time, he was the wolf, not the prey.

And I’m not sure how I feel about that. I’m not certain who my best friend is anymore. What happened to the healer I knew? Or was that just another illusion of mine?

Checking the clock, I realize I should head out for Querelle’s where another evening of pouring drinks awaits me.

By the door, I grab my wallet and phone, then step outside. The sun is still high and I blink, squinting at the bright day like a man coming out of an excavation site. I only get a few hours of daylight as it is, and pretty soon the summer will be over.

The very thought of spending the winter on my own shoots panic through my chest, and I walk faster, as though loneliness is chasing me down the street.

At Querelle’s front door, I peek through the dark glass, at the empty bar. Something about this place repels me, and for a second,
