That same afternoon Colin wandered from his office to a nearby park bench to place his weekly call to his mother in Scituate, Massachusetts. Colin had repeatedly begged Brianna Campbell to move to Virginia, but she flatly refused to leave the home she had loved for forty years. As committed as Colin was to his life in Virginia, his mother’s well-being was a constant source of worry and he looked forward to their weekly calls.

"Hi, Mom. What’s going on?"

"Colin, I got the campus newspaper last week," she told him.

Uh-oh, Colin thought and sighed. "Mom, I really wish you wouldn't read that rag."

"I like seeing your name in the paper," she said proudly. "But this issue talked about an older case. A case you were involved with a month or so ago. The girl's name is Catherine O'Malley?"

Colin felt his stomach clench. "Yeah, Mom," he said finally. "I handled the case. Not much to it as it turned out."

"Did you notice how much the girl looks like Kathy?" his mother asked slowly. "The resemblance is rather striking. Made me stop and think about how long it's been since…" she stopped and Colin heard her voice break. "…since she’s been gone."

Colin inhaled quickly, his chest tight.

"Colin? Are you alright?"

"Yeah, mom. It’s just…it’s hard for me to…" he shook himself, "…hard for me to think about that night."

"It's hard for all of us to think about that night, son," Brianna said. "I just…I just wondered if the girl was alright."

"She’s fine," Colin said. "A little shook up, naturally, but moving on."

"And the boy?"

"Why do you care about him?" Colin blurted, his voice raw with emotion. He glanced down at his hand which had clenched into a fist. "He’s nothing but a worthless piece of—" he caught himself. A half-panicked rage filled his chest much like the rage he’d felt on day he'd quarreled with Joshua. He choked on it, shaking inside, then forced in a deep breath.

"Colin?" his mother said. "Son, what's wrong?"

"Sorry, Mom," Colin said. "I’ve been putting in a lot of hours, and I’m really tired. I didn’t mean to snap at you." He was horrified to have nearly lost control with his mother, and he stared down at the ground, swallowing hard against the lump in his throat. This whole thing had gone too far.

"Son, did the case upset you?"

Colin sighed. "Yeah, Mom, it did. I thought it was behind me but..." he shook his head. "…but I guess it’s still on my mind. Maybe because the girl does look like...." he stopped. He forced his voice into a gentler register. "Let's talk about something else. Let me tell you about a guy who may have stolen your son’s heart away."

"Colin!" Brianna said. "Tell me about him!"

"Well, mom," Colin began, "his name is Josh…"
