Chapter S

q uma would have liked to commit a few acts of violence against Teague for that phone call. As it was, he restrained himself for two reasons. First, they couldn't be sure it was Teague who had called. Secondly, if he read Teague's character correctly, any response would only make things worse as Teague attempted to prove that he wasn't intimidated. Nate agreed with that reasoning, once he heard what was going on.

There were no further calls in the following week, and things around the county stayed quiet. Then there was another break-in and robbery, this time closer to town. the items taken included canned food, rifles and hunting knives, From that moment, the sheriff's office was besieged and talk in the local bars grew ugly. Teague's voice was hardly loudei than the rest.

In fact, it soon began to seem that Teague was lying low, as if he sensed that the Conard County Sheriff's Office wa! paying more than ordinary attention to him. Which it was Nate admitted to Wendy and Yuma. Expecting some kine of trouble from that quarter, he had told his deputies to keep a sharp eye out.

By the end of yet another week, Wendy complained to Yuma that it felt as if the county were sitting on a powder keg, just waiting for something to happen.

" " "The last time it felt like this around here, " she told him was right after John Grant was killed by that escaped con, remember? Everybody was tense like this until they caught him. Expectant. Uneasy. Angry. Ready to blow if something else happened. "

"Robbery and murder aren't the same thing, though." Yuma had just come back from another trip into the mountains to see his friends and was sitting at the table, rubbing his bad leg and looking fatigued.

"No, they aren't the same thing," she agreed. "But these folks are feeling violated, and that's every bit as bad. They consider their homes and property sacrosanct, and every one of them is wondering who will be next. Or what'll happen if somebody is home when these guys break in."

Beyond the kitchen window, the autumn night had grown dark. A chilly wind was blowing stiffly enough to rattle the flap on the exhaust fan. Wendy wrapped her arms around herself, as if she suddenly felt cold.

She had gone into trauma medicine because of him That thought had been whirling around in Yuma's mind since Nate had told him.

Eighteen-year-old girls were one of life's most priceless treasures, Yuma had always thought. They were young, innocent , pure and loving. Full of a need to give, full of confidence that love could make anything right. It had been to protect that incredible purity and innocenre in Wendy that he had kept her at a distance.

Now he knew that she had deliberately and willfully sacrificed some of that naivetq and innocence for no better reason than to understand his pain. She had willingly shouldered pain in order to share his.

It hurt. It hurt him in deep places that he tried to keep locked up.
