CHAPTER ELEVEN
The door banged against the wall. Joel sat bolt upright, startled from sleep, and stared at Aden. “You can’t enter my home.”
“I can, and I have,” Aden replied. He stalked toward the bed, followed by other figures, men and women. Joel had never seen them before but recognized them instantly as sorcerers.
Aden reached down and stroked Lanny’s arm, which hung over the edge of the bed. “He’s mine now.”
“No!”
Instantly, the others grabbed Joel, pinning him to the mattress. He struggled but couldn’t free himself. Reaching for his magic, he found only an empty pit. He had nothing.
Aden shoved the covers off Lanny, who lay nude and exposed and seemingly unaware of anything. “He’ll sleep through it,” Aden said, winking at Joel. “He won’t feel a thing.”
“No!” Joel tried to shout again, but the word was lost as one of the others gestured at him, using magic to rip out his throat.
Aden positioned himself on top of Lanny and entered him. Joel could do nothing but watch helplessly as Aden ripped his lover’s soul, while the other sorcerers ripped Joel’s body to shreds with their power.
Joel awakened lying on his side, with the unfamiliar weight of another body against his. He blinked, disoriented. The dream he’d been having—nightmare, really—had left him confused, and in the dim light filtering through the drapes over his window, he couldn’t quite sort out reality from his subconscious’s attempt to scare the shit out of him.
He turned onto his back and studied the man lying next to him. In sleep, Lanny looked young, barely out of his teens. The man’s smooth, unlined face was peaceful. Apparently he hadn’t shared Joel’s nightmares, for which Joel was thankful.
Lanny didn’t need to see his own death.
At least that had been a dream. Aden and other sorcerers hadn’t really broken into Joel’s apartment. That part had been only Joel’s own fears and paranoia, brought to vivid colored life by his imagination.
He closed his eyes for a moment and forced his thoughts to the night before. To Lanny’s statement that he wanted to take care of Joel. To his declaration of love. Things Joel had refused to admit he even wanted in his life, because allowing someone in that much would endanger them and him.
He couldn’t shut Lanny out. Not after what they’d shared. Making love to the man—and it had unquestionably been lovemaking, not just fucking—had changed everything. He had never felt so close to another living being, not even Davion. A momentary pang of guilt struck him at the thought.
Davion was a long time ago. His death was an accident, and you deserve to live life and be happy.
The voice in Joel’s thoughts wasn’t his own, nor was it one he could place, and he didn’t try to. It spoke wisdom, whoever and whatever it was. He had denied his own happiness for the past decade, choosing to punish himself for a death for which human law couldn’t punish him. He had chosen to take the tiniest bits
