Decorative Arts

The 2nd floor showcases decorative arts. Besides fine examples of Portuguese 17th-century faience and 18th-century Chinese porcelain, you’ll find intricate 19th-century glassware by Vista Alegre, jewellery (from Iron Age to delicate 18th-century Portuguese filigree creations) and 17th-century Namban screens, which vividly portray the arrival of Portuguese colonisers on Japanese shores.

Standing sentinel on the edge of Porto’s former Jewish quarter, this muscular edifice, built in 1767, was both a prison and a court of appeal in former lives. With the Carnation Revolution and the fall of dictatorship in 1974, it ceased to be a jail. Nowadays it is an eerie, highly atmospheric backdrop for rotating photography exhibitions – many with a thought-provoking slant.
