The University of East London is on the north bank of the Royal Albert Dock. The university was opened on this site in the year 2000. It faces across the dock to London City Airport, which lies between the Royal Albert and King George V docks.

The Sir Steve Redgrave Bridge at the head of the Royal Albert Dock. It seems appropriate that as London is hosting the 2012 Olympic Games a Dockland’s bridge should be named after Britain’s five-times Olympic gold medal rowing champion.

Silvertown

This mural on a wall beside St Mark’s Church depicts a local street in the heyday of the Royal Docks. Today, Silvertown is dominated by the huge Tate & Lyle sugar factory which has been here since 1880. In January 1917, 50 tons of TNT exploded in a Silvertown chemical works, killing 73 people and devastating the surrounding area.
