Chapter Eight

“I need to know why you’re doing this. How many people you killed, how long this has been going on for and why. I have to know all of it,” Hil said.

The man’s eyes on him were hard. Hil was no longer hugging Ryland in that comforting manner that Ryland had so needed at the time. Now he was standing up and meaning business. He might’ve offered to protect Ryland from his own pack if he had to do it, but he was clearly still angry about the entire thing. He wanted answers, and Ryland didn’t know if he could give them to him.

Ryland looked down at his hands. “Tell you why I’m doing this and how many people I’ve killed? I’d rather be tortured and killed than tell you any of that,” he said.

He heard the growl that came from Hil’s throat, and he didn’t dare look up at him. He was a killer, but he was also a coward. The two did sort of go together.

“Did you know that you’re pregnant?” Hil said.

Ryland looked up at him. Hil’s arms were crossed, and he was staring down at Ryland with a brow raised. He was being serious, and Ryland’s heart raced faster than it had the first time he realized what his new job would be.

“You…you’re lying. That’s not possible, I’m not an omega! I’m human! I told you that!”

Hil pursed his lips, but he also nodded his head. “Theo said you might not know. It doesn’t matter if you’re a human. The fact that I’m an alpha is enough to do it, even if we were only together once. I can get Theo and Ryan, they’re the healers that were nearly killed at last night’s birthday party, by the way, to come in here and tell it to you if you need to hear it.”

Ryland shook his head. “No…I–I believe you, I guess, but, Jesus, are you sure?”

Hil nodded. “They did some blood tests on you when you came in. There’s probably some paperwork around here somewhere that’ll prove it.”

Ryland shook his head again. “No, I mean, I would like to see it, but later. For now I’ll take your word on it.”

“You believe me, even though I never told you I was an alpha?”

“You don’t have a reason to lie to me about something like this,” Ryland said. Hil was the only one between them who was even making an attempt at being honest.

Hil nodded. “Good, because now that you believe me, I want you to know something.”

Ryland looked him in the eyes, waiting for what it was that Hil was going to say to him.

The man’s eyes remained hard and cold. “I’m being serious. I’m still not entirely convinced that you didn’t click on my profile so you could get a closer look at my pack, at Lucius or Conner or Mason.”

Ryland was shaking his head. “You lied to me, too, you know?”
