Conclusion

The preceding pages have sought to reveal the metrical, rhetorical, and philosophical dimensions of Bringhurst’s rhythmic sensibilities, all the way from the steady reading motion achieved through careful typesetting to the great fractal patterns of Haida myth, from the basic metrical grace of individual phrases to the complexity of polyphonic literary performance. Key examples have been given of each in the text, yet these are but starting points for those intrigued by the way Bringhurst manages to reflect the rhythmic and polyphonic nature of reality in his craftsmanship. Such explication is necessary to a full appreciation of Bringhurst’s artistry, but, like all rhythmically based artforms, the real power of his work cannot be accessed by the intellect alone but must be processed by the whole body. With the foregoing analysis in mind, we may more readily find ourselves listening carefully to his poetic translations with a rhythmically tuned ear, prepared to be whisked away from the sidelines into the thick of the poetic dance, in the midst of which we may find revealed to our altered consciousness a cosmos pulsating in patterns very different from those we typically perceive, yet at the same time strangely familiar. Swirling around the dance floor with Bringhurst, we learn to trust the lead of the lexical percussionist, our minds spinning gracefully as our feet ponder the enigma of what is.
