Chapter Twenty-Four
At the Window
Wearing a pair of striped cotton gym shorts and a white sleeveless t-shirt, Tatum sat on the edge of her bed, sipping a can of cold brew as she watched Janeesia drive away.
Two more cans sat close to her on the small end table. Tatum spent so much time having sex with Janeesia she fell behind in her regularly scheduled consumption of alcohol.
The eastern horizon already glowed pale gray, so the other woman wouldn’t beat dawn home.
Well, Tatum couldn’t help her greatgrandmother’s prejudices.
She couldn’t imagine living with a woman that old. Mom was cool about almost everything, but every so often let slip some comment that revealed she grew up in a less enlightened time, embarrassing Tatum.
Not that modern society was enlightened yet, but at least people no longer automatically dumped on people of color and gay folks.
Tatum burped, and held her stomach. Fatigue pressed her down, but she couldn’t sleep without at least one more beer polluting her bloodstream.
Drained from the energy she expended on giving both herself and Janeesia orgasms, she felt oddly happy yet unsatisfied, like eating a sugar-coated breakfast cereal.
Did she just use Janeesia to banish the ghost of Debbie?
Carefully, Tatum went inside to access her memories of Janeesia. But just a nudge, like probing a broken, aching tooth with her tongue.
No, picturing Debbie’s face still triggered a cascade of bittersweet memories leading to the devastating evening Debbie told her goodbye forever, and the days and nights of heartache and loneliness since.
Thinking of Janeesia didn’t give her the same romantic, golden glow. Janeesia wasn’t her first love.
But it didn’t matter. They had an unusual rapport. She remembered waltzing to “I Could Have Danced All Night” and promenading while pretending they were two old European lesbians who’d been lovers since childhood.
Debbie gave her hearts and flowers, but she didn’t have such an imagination.
Or Janeesia’s heart, as big as her bust and her hips. Debbie often acted tense and moody. Signs Tatum now realized indicated Tatum wasn’t enough to provide her every need. Debbie wanted social acceptance and respectability as well as loving affection and regular orgasms.
Janeesia couldn’t stop giving. Going to a first play rehearsal, she just had to bring doughnuts for everybody.
Tatum popped open the next beer in line, and half-drained it with one gulp.
The real question was, how could she allow herself to fall for Janeesia, when the woman thought of Tatum as just a one night stand to satisfy her bi-curiosity?
All right, Janeesia wasn’t quite so shallow as that. But she didn’t talk about experimenting to make sure of her sexual orientation or any of that jazz.
But sooner or later she’d disappear on the arm of a man, leaving Tatum behind to eat her dust.
She didn’t identify as lesbian-only—or lesbian at all, from what Tatum could see.
How could Tatum give her enough love and sex to keep Janeesia from breaking her heart as Debbie did?
