Lavender Secrets

“So Nicole left, and I haven’t heard from her since.”

“Well, was it true?”

Emma lifted her head. “Was what true? That Nicole and I are involved? She’s getting married, Ma.”

“Okay, maybe I should have asked, do you want it to be true?”

Emma dropped her head into her hands. “I don’t know. I mean yeah, but then I know she’s getting married, so I shouldn’t feel this way.”

Her mother rubbed Emma between the shoulders. “We can’t always help how we feel.”

“I guess.”

“Well, that does sound like a bad week. “

It gets worse, Emma thought. She looked at her mother. Her long gray hair was braided down the back, and her face already showed signs of a summer tan. “Ma, has Dad ever called you?

I mean since he left?”

Her mother pulled back, sitting up. “He’s long since gone, Emma. No sense dragging that back up.”

“I know.”

Her mother stood up. “I need to walk down to the hardware store for some more plant spikes. Do you want to come?”

In other words, end of conversation, Emma thought. She glanced at her watch. She had three hours until she was supposed to meet Annah at Samuel’s baseball game. “Yeah, okay. Let me get a drink of water fi rst.”

She guzzled down a glass of tap water and then followed her mother out the front door, giving up on the notion of getting any further information about her father.

The mid-afternoon sun glared in Emma’s eyes as she scanned the small crowd for Annah. She searched the benches along the side of the baseball fi eld. There, along the far bench, she saw Annah, looking sullen and bored. Typical teenage 114

posturing, she thought with a grin. She paused by the side of the fi eld for a time. Was she ready for meeting Annah again, for being a big sister? She’d spent most of the past week just moping about her father and the mess she’d made of things with Nicole. But she wanted to come to meet Annah today, not just because Nicole had suggested it, but because it was a connection to her father. No matter how rejected she felt by him, she still wanted to know his new family. She walked around behind home plate and hopped onto the metal bleachers where Annah sat. There were a dozen or so people cheering the teams on either side. She had no idea what inning it was. She walked up next to Annah.

“This seat taken?” she asked.

Annah looked up, and her expression changed from bored to excited. “Emma!” She jumped up and threw her arms around Emma, giving her a tight squeeze.

“Hey, nice to see you, too,” Emma said.

Annah gave a quick look around like she wanted to be sure no one that mattered saw her un-teenage-like outburst. “Glad you could come,” she said more sedately, though her eyes still held a sparkle.

“Glad you invited me.” Emma gave her a pat on the back.

“Now, which team is Sam on?”

“Samuel,” Annah corrected with an exasperated sigh. “He’s number 7, shortstop, in blue.
