Lasso My Heart

Chapter One

Kyleigh looked out of the train car window. Her heart raced, unsure what the tracks ahead would lead her to. She was on an adventure and though she was on the last leg of her journey, Kyleigh had never felt so many nerves. A million questions ran through her head and it all came down to, what if this was the biggest mistake of her life? She tried to recall what she had left behind and the thousands of miles that she so far had traveled.

The landscape was dirty and dusty, nothing like the emerald green isle of her home. The New World was nothing like she had imagined. It was different, but she figured anything had to be better than the coastal settlements thousands of her neighbors were forced to live in after the Highlands Clearance. So Kyleigh did what every single woman with some courage in her position could do, she had put a few lines in an American paper. The advertisement brought letters and Kyleigh settled on a nice looking man that seemed to be just what she needed.

Reed was tall and handsome and looked to be a bit older than Kyleigh.

He owned a ranch and wanted a wife, but there weren’t enough women out West for all the men. This gave women like Kyleigh an opportunity at a new life. But it wasn’t without its risk and Kyleigh worried that everything he had written to her was a lie. What if they didn’t get along? Kyleigh would have to deal with it when the time came she thought. Though in her heart, she hoped that he was as sweet and wonderful as his letters made him sound.

She had reread the three letters that she had received at least a dozen times. The pages were worn in her pocket and she had to stop her urge to look at them again. Kyleigh tried to rest, closing her eyes to the lull of the train. It was not until the train car stopped suddenly, that she realized she had fallen asleep. The train conductor shouted “San Francisco, last call for San Francisco.”

Kyleigh frantically sat up. She stood up and grabbed the bag tucked away over her head. It was the only thing she had brought with her for her new life and taking a deep breath, she climbed off the train. After weeks of walking, long boat rides and weeks on the train, Kyleigh had finally made it from her home in Scotland. The moment of truth had finally arrived and she just hoped that it wouldn’t be the biggest mistake of her life. There was no Plan B for Kyleigh. Reed was her last chance at some sort of happiness.

Reed was almost as nervous as Kyleigh was, though he was worried for many other reasons. Never in his life had he imagined he would be paying for a woman to travel half way around the world for him. And now that she was here, Reed worried that he would somehow not live up to her expectations.
