“This is absolutely ridiculous, I’m a grown man, for goodness’ sake. And I’ve told you that I’ve already eaten dinner.”

“Oh, I’m well aware. You mentioned that a few times. Honestly, though, I ended up having to work later than I was supposed to today because Terri called in sick. Terri always calls in sick, actually. In fact, I don’t know why Lynn doesn’t just get rid of her. Lynn’s my boss. Anyway, the point is that I’ve had a long day and I could use some down time, but I don’t feel like going home just yet. Have you ever had that feeling, where you want to relax but not necessarily at home? Like, you want to be out among people but in some sort of different setting?”

Daniel rolled his eyes as Sophie stopped for air. He had completely lost track of what she was talking about.

“Anyway, like I said, I appreciate the company,” Sophie continued, smiling at him. She picked up her enormous cup and sipped her soda.

Daniel huffed in response and watched as the clear plastic straw filled with dark amber liquid. Sophie stopped drinking and the liquid sank back down the straw.

“I just can’t imagine why anyone needs a cup so big,” Daniel said, trying to sound annoyed.

“Yeah, it’s the largest size they’ve got,” Sophie answered proudly. “I asked them to super-size it.”

“Super-size?”

“Yep. This place pretty much lets you make everything bigger, if you want to.” She popped a chicken nugget into her mouth, and Daniel frowned.

“Those things are just disgusting, I don’t know how you can eat them.”

“Don’t knock something until you’ve tried it, Daniel.”

“All you have to do is look up the ingredients in that garbage, then you could knock it without having to eat that mess.”

“And have you actually looked up the ingredients?” Sophie asked innocently. She dipped another piece of chicken into a tiny plastic carton of barbeque sauce.

“Well, not exactly, but I just know what kind of stuff they put in there.” Daniel replied haughtily. He glared at the chicken, even more disgusting when it was coated with that sauce. He looked repulsed as Sophie chewed, a drop of barbeque sauce stuck to her upper lip.

“Oh, Daniel,” she said, her mouth still full. “You just crack me up.”

Daniel leaned back and crossed his arms, hoping to convey just how not-funny he was trying to be.

Sophie had come by his place unexpectedly, around 8:00 that evening, and asked him to go to dinner with her. Daniel had explained patiently that he had eaten dinner hours ago, at a normal time, and that in fact it was nearly time to be getting ready for bed. Sophie had simply looked at him and laughed, announcing that it was still early and even if he wasn’t hungry, she was, and would he keep her company, pretty please? Daniel had agreed, unaware that she would be dragging him into a nearby fast food joint. This was a place that he normally avoided at all costs.
