Merek was vigilant as he stood beside Vance. He was determined not to hurry his mate as he packed his father’s tools into the big red toolbox that was in the open bed of his truck. As much as he wanted to watch the delectable ass that was presented before him as Vance bent down to pick up the tools on the lower shelf of the work bench, he forced himself to keep scanning the area around the shop. He could not take the chance that the Legari warriors would return to kill his mate.

He watched as Vance locked up the body shop and carried the last of his father’s tools to the bed of his truck. There was a light breeze and the weather was calm. Everything appeared to be normal. It was a peaceful night that would have been a beautiful time to take a walk with his aheri were it not for the constant threat of attack.

Closing his eyes, Merek centered himself and focused on the waves of power that surrounded them. So far, he had not felt anything that would indicate the use of magic from his world. Opening his eyes, he looked up at Vance as he stood on the tailgate and bent forward to close the red tool chest and lock it securely. The way Vance’s jeans hugged the muscular globes of his backside made Merek’s mouth pool with saliva. He wanted to pull down those jeans, spread Vance’s cheeks, lick the seam, and bury his tongue inside the puckered hole of his mate. He wanted to drive Vance senseless with need, and he wanted to bury himself deep inside of him.

“Are you looking at my ass again, Merek?” Vance’s words pulled him out of his imagining.

“Yes, aheri. I am,” Merek admitted with no apology. “It is a very nice ass.”

Vance’s bark of laughter made him smile. When he looked up and saw Vance looking down on him with a wide smile and sparkling eyes, he couldn’t stop the wave of happiness that rolled over him. He waited patiently for Vance to jump down from the bed of the truck to stand beside him.

“You have a pretty awesome ass, too, Merek,” Vance said quietly, his voice deepening with desire. “Do you think we can get to your home soon so I can love you before I explode?”

Merek’s smile grew at the thought that his mate needed the closeness of their bond as much as he needed it. Reaching out, he extended his hand palm up, waiting for Vance to place his hand in his. When Vance did so without hesitation, he pulled Vance’s hand toward him and kissed the marking on his left wrist, smiling at Vance’s immediate moan.

“It will take us a bit of travel to get to the place where we will be safe when we go through the portal,” Merek said softly. “Once we arrive, I do not plan on letting you out of our bed for a very long time.
